Squamish Nation: Climate Action Planning

Centering Community Voices in Climate Leadership
Through support from the Nation Building Grant, Squamish Nation developed a Climate Action Strategy grounded in cultural values, self-determination, and community priorities. This work reflects a broader vision of reclaiming governance and planning for a sustainable, sovereign future.
What’s Happening in Squamish Nation
With funding from the Nation Building Grant, the Nation led a community-based engagement process—interviewing Squamish members to understand what climate action means to them and how they want to respond as a Nation.
The result is a strategy built with the people, not just for them—creating alignment between community concerns, cultural teachings, and long-term planning.
Governance Through Climate Leadership
Nation building takes many forms. For Squamish Nation, it meant strengthening their internal governance by creating a clear, community-rooted climate vision. This process not only addressed environmental priorities but also built capacity, connection, and long-term planning tools.
Across the province, BC First Nations are using the Nation Building Grant to support their unique self-determined priorities—whether it’s governance, youth engagement, or climate planning.
