Community-Driven Energy for a Sustainable Future

In Bella Coola, the Nuxalk Nation is leading an energy shift rooted in culture, self-determination, and sustainability. With support from the British Columbia Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (BCICEI), the Nation is taking key steps to reduce reliance on diesel and build a clean energy future that reflects the needs of both the land and the people.

What’s Happening in Nuxalk Nation

From updating their community energy plan to creating a local energy champion, Nuxalk Nation is laying a strong foundation for long-term clean energy development. As one staff member shares, “Diesel fuel is expensive, and it’s not going to last. So we’re preparing for that shift now.”

The Nation’s approach is about more than infrastructure—it’s about empowering community. They’re focused on education, long-term visioning, and engaging youth to take ownership of the energy transition.

One tip shared by the Nuxalk team? “Don’t try to do everything at once.” They emphasize the importance of starting small, focusing on the projects that are achievable now, and building momentum over time. They’ve also highlighted the value of community energy champions—local leads who can keep momentum going, even as leadership or capacity shifts.

BC First Nations Leading the Way

Across the province, BC First Nations are driving clean energy work that respects the land, supports local economies, and builds community resilience. Nuxalk Nation is showing what’s possible when energy planning is rooted in culture and guided by community priorities.

By building capacity from within and taking a phased approach, they’re ensuring this transition is sustainable—not just environmentally, but socially and economically as well.
