Gitksannabis: Indigenous Cannabis

Advancing Indigenous Participation in the Cannabis Economy
Gitksannabis is one of the Indigenous-led ventures supported through the BC Indigenous Cannabis Business Fund (ICBF). Located in the heart of Gitxsan territory, the business represents a meaningful step toward self-determined economic development—creating opportunities for employment, revenue generation, and sovereignty in a highly regulated sector.
What’s Happening at Gitksannabis
Through support from ICBF, Gitksannabis was able to grow their operation and invest in the tools, equipment, and compliance support needed to compete in the cannabis retail market. But as the team shares in the video, this work is about more than business—it’s about nation building, community wellness, and reclaiming a place in an evolving economy.
As one Gitksannabis team member puts it, “We’re showing our youth that they can be part of something legitimate and community-led.”
From interior renovations to building partnerships, the project has created jobs, improved local infrastructure, and inspired conversations around Indigenous participation in regulated industries.
BC First Nations Leading in the Cannabis Sector
Across the province, BC First Nations are entering the cannabis space on their own terms—guided by community values and supported through programs like ICBF. Gitksannabis is a strong example of how Indigenous businesses can thrive when given the resources and autonomy to lead.
This isn’t just about cannabis—it’s about what it represents: independence, opportunity, and self-determined growth
