Building Future Skills Through STEM

Students at Thornhill using laptops, 3D printers, and coding software through the STEM program supported by the K–12 Education Grant.

A Program Designed to Spark Curiosity

The STEM program at Thornhill is about more than just tech. It’s a way to introduce students to future-facing tools while nurturing creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. With the addition of a 3D printer, laptops, and coding software, students are learning how to design and build projects that connect digital skills to real-world applications. Whether they’re printing fidget toys that snap together or learning how to troubleshoot their designs, the excitement is evident.

Learning Through Trial, Error, and Teamwork

One of the biggest impacts of the program is how it encourages students to try something new, even if it doesn’t work the first time. The classroom becomes a space where experimentation is welcomed, where failure becomes part of the process, and where students support one another in finding new solutions. It’s building confidence, perseverance, and collaboration skills that will serve them for years to come.

A Flexible Grant for Community-Based Learning

The K–12 Education Grant is designed to meet the needs of B.C. First Nation schools and classrooms with a majority of First Nation students. It provides flexible funding so that educators can build programming that responds to the needs of their community. At Thornhill, that meant investing in technology that inspires students and builds their digital literacy—on their own terms.

Bringing Joy Into the Classroom

From the moment the STEM program began, students were eager to get involved. Their reaction said it all—this was something special, something they looked forward to every week. When students are excited about learning, when they feel empowered to explore, and when they get to see the results of their efforts come to life, the impact is lasting.
