24-Hour Shelter Services

A Program Designed to Keep People Safe
Before this funding, the shelter’s doors were only open a few hours each day, leaving people vulnerable in extreme cold. In northern B.C., where winter temperatures can drop as low as minus 40 or even minus 50 degrees, this was life-threatening. With the support of the Poverty Reduction & Social Inclusion Fund, Nawican can now operate around the clock, giving people a safe place to stay whenever they need it.
Support That Extends Beyond Shelter
The shelter does more than offer a warm place to sleep. It provides food services, clothing, storage, and advocacy support to help people navigate other agencies. It creates a space where people feel seen and supported, where they can start thinking beyond survival and begin planning for the future; finding housing, reconnecting with family, or pursuing education and work opportunities.

Stability, Hope, and Second Chances
With support from the Poverty Reduction & Social Inclusion Fund, Nawican can focus on what matters most: helping people. The funding has removed the constant worry about closing doors or running out of resources and allows the shelter to offer stability, compassion, and dignity to those who need it most.
Being open 24 hours a day has changed everything. People no longer face long hours outside in freezing temperatures. Staff hear stories from guests who say the shelter was their last hope, the one place that never turned them away. Every success, whether it is finding housing, entering treatment, or reconnecting with family, creates a ripple effect of hope across the community.
Nawican’s shelter is more than a building. It is a lifeline for people in crisis, a place of safety and second chances, and a foundation for change. With the right support, it continues to offer warmth, care, and the opportunity to build a better future.
