Building a Future Rooted in Culture and Community Voice
With support from the Nation Building Grant, Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation is creating a clear, community-driven path toward self-determination. Grounded in culture, ceremony, and collective vision, the Nation is using this funding to build internal capacity and long-term planning tools that reflect their people’s voice.
What’s Happening in Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it
The Nation is developing a comprehensive governance plan that puts their citizens at the centre of the process. This includes opportunities for members to share their ideas, express concerns, and co-create a future rooted in traditional values and modern leadership.
As shared in the video, “It’s about making space for all voices—so the future we build reflects who we truly are.”
The project also supports staff development, internal communications, and the building blocks needed for lasting self-governance. This isn’t just about planning—it’s about preparing the Nation to thrive on their own terms.
Strengthening Governance Across BC First Nations
Across the province, BC First Nations are leading powerful work to reclaim governance and build systems that reflect their laws, traditions, and community priorities. The Nation Building Grant supports this journey with multi-year funding designed to strengthen leadership, institutional capacity, and long-term resiliency.
Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it’s work is a reminder that Nation building isn’t a checklist—it’s a lived, evolving process rooted in people, place, and purpose.
