Tla-o-qui-aht Nation Clean Energy

Generating Power, Preserving Knowledge
Tla-o-qui-aht Nation is showing what’s possible when clean energy and community come together. With support from the BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (BCICEI), the Nation has developed run-of-river hydroelectric projects that power homes while protecting the environment—and the heart of it all is intergenerational collaboration.
What’s Happening in Tla-o-qui-aht Territory
Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tla-o-qui-aht Nation’s Canoe Creek hydro project has been supplying clean electricity since 2010. But the energy isn’t just flowing through the turbines—it’s flowing between generations.
Elders, leaders, and youth are working together to ensure this work not only meets the community’s current needs, but continues for generations to come. This collaboration allows young people to learn from knowledge keepers while gaining experience in energy stewardship, sustainability, and Nation-building.
As shared in the video, “We’re not just making power—we’re building something beautiful together.”
The Power of Generational Unity
Clean energy is more than a technical solution—it’s a cultural opportunity. Across BC, First Nations are creating long-term sustainability by bringing together the wisdom of Elders and the drive of youth. This unity ensures knowledge is passed on, skills are developed locally, and communities can move forward with strength.
For Tla-o-qui-aht, it’s not just about powering homes—it’s about lighting the way for future generations.
