Splatsin | Declaration Engagement

Michael Winstanley of Splatsin First Nation, Title and Rights Director, working on DAEF-supported Indigenous governance

Advancing Self-Determination Through Dialogue and Law

Splatsin First Nation is actively shaping their future by engaging in meaningful dialogue with the Province of British Columbia. With support from the Declaration Act Engagement Fund (DAEF), Splatsin is building internal capacity and taking important steps toward aligning provincial law with Indigenous rights under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

What’s Happening in Splatsin

Through this initiative, Splatsin is creating space for Nation-led engagement—ensuring their perspectives, values, and legal traditions are heard and respected in conversations with the provincial government. This process isn’t just about policy—it’s about protecting land, upholding culture, and asserting the right to self-determination.

As shared in the video, “This fund allows us to lead the conversation, not just react to it.”

The DAEF has provided the tools and flexibility needed to support community dialogue, build governance capacity, and begin co-developing solutions that honour both Indigenous and provincial legal systems.

Supporting Nation-Led Change Across BC

Across British Columbia, First Nations are working to ensure the Declaration Act becomes more than words—it becomes action. The DAEF supports this by providing non-repayable funding for Nations to lead engagements in their own way, at their own pace.

Splatsin First Nation’s work is a powerful example of what self-determined engagement looks like in practice—collaborative, grounded, and forward-thinking.
