Language and Culture at Tl’etinqox

Bringing Youth and Adults Together Through Language and Beading
At Tl’etinqox School, language revitalization is more than learning to speak. It’s about reconnecting with culture, community, and identity. With support from the NRT Language Grant, the school has created an intergenerational program that brings youth and adults together to learn the Tsilhqot’in language through hands-on cultural activities like beading.
By combining language classes with traditional arts, the program helps learners of all ages build confidence and pride in who they are. Beading becomes more than just an art form. It becomes a tool for storytelling, connection, and language practice. Learners hear and use Tsilhqot’in words as they create, and the repetition helps the language stick in a natural, meaningful way.
Learning in Community
Parents, caregivers, Elders, and students gather in the classroom and work alongside each other. Kids see the adults in their lives engaging with the language and culture. Adults watch the kids embrace both with excitement and curiosity. These shared experiences are helping to build a stronger community where language is lived, not just learned.
Many of the adults in the program didn’t grow up speaking their language, but now they’re reclaiming it alongside the next generation. For youth, these experiences make language and culture feel alive and present in everyday life.

Why Intergenerational and Cultural Learning Matters
Programs like this create a ripple effect. When language is tied to culture, it becomes easier to remember and more powerful to use. When both youth and adults are involved, the impact lasts longer and spreads further. Tl’etinqox is showing that language revitalization works best when it includes the whole community and reflects the ways people already live, work, and create together.

Supporting First Nations Language Revitalization in BC

Whether it’s through immersive programs, intergenerational learning, or land-based approaches, the grant provides flexible funding so communities can create meaningful and lasting impact in their efforts to reclaim, strengthen, and pass on their languages.
