Carmen Tait’s Journey with NRT

Carmen’s Journey Begins with Education
Carmen Tait’s story begins long before she ever stepped into a clinic, long before she became a pediatrician dedicated to supporting families and children. Her journey started as a student who carried both ambition and responsibility, and who understood the challenges of pursuing higher education while navigating financial and systemic barriers.
During those early years, she received support that allowed her to focus on her studies and pursue a profession where she could make a lasting difference. That support became the foundation of the work she does today.
Giving Back to the Next Generation
As Carmen continued through her medical training, she held onto the memory of what it meant to be supported as a student. That experience shaped her understanding of community, opportunity, and the power of investing in future leaders.
Now a practicing pediatrician, she has chosen to give back by donating to help other students access the opportunities that once helped her.
For Carmen, giving back is not something separate from her work. It is an extension of her values, her gratitude, and her belief that every student deserves the chance to succeed. Her contribution reflects a cycle of support that strengthens families, communities, and generations to come. Those who receive support often become the ones who later provide it.

Why Representation Matters
It can be to enter a field where there are few people who share your experiences or understand your perspective. That absence can create challenges that go beyond academics. It affects confidence, belonging, and the ability to see yourself in the work you hope to do.
When students see someone who shares their story, it becomes easier to imagine a future that once felt out of reach. Representation opens doors that talent alone cannot. It reminds the next generation that they are not alone and that their voices and experiences carry value.
Investing in Students Builds Stronger Nations
This is why the Scholarship and Bursary Fund at the New Relationship Trust is so important. Education is one of the most powerful tools for long-term Nation Building. By supporting First Nations students in their academic journeys, we strengthen communities, increase capacity, and open pathways to leadership and professional growth. Each contribution helps create opportunities for students who are ready to build careers that serve their Nations and their communities.
Many recipients, like Carmen, return to support the program after completing their education, creating a cycle of empowerment that continues to grow over time. When we invest in students, we are investing in self-determination, representation, and a future shaped by First Nations knowledge and leadership.
How You Can Support Student Success
The demand for scholarships and bursaries continues to grow every year. Many applicants meet the criteria, demonstrate strong commitment to their education, and show clear dedication to supporting their communities. Yet available funds do not always allow us to support every student. Every donation helps change that. Every contribution ensures that more students can step into their studies with confidence, stability, and hope for what their future can hold.
