Haida Wild | Tradition Meets Tech

Strengthening Food Sovereignty Through Innovation and Seafood
In Haida Gwaii, Haida Wild is blending tradition with innovation to bring sustainably harvested seafood to broader markets—while supporting local livelihoods and food sovereignty. With support from the Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty Grant, the company has upgraded its operations with new packaging technology that boosts quality, efficiency, and shelf life.
What’s Happening at Haida Wild
With the addition of a state-of-the-art vacuum sealing machine, Haida Wild is able to preserve its high-quality seafood longer, reducing waste and enhancing distribution. This investment ensures that seafood harvested by Haida fishers maintains its freshness and traditional value as it reaches customers near and far.
But the upgrade isn’t just about equipment—it’s about economic development and cultural preservation. By growing their operations, Haida Wild is creating local jobs, supporting community members, and strengthening a food system that’s been rooted in Haida territory for generations.
As shared in the video, “It’s about sharing Haida food, values, and stories through every product we ship.”
Why It Matters for BC First Nations
Across British Columbia, Indigenous food producers are leading innovative efforts to revitalize their food systems in ways that are self-determined, sustainable, and deeply cultural. Haida Wild’s story is one of resilience—demonstrating how the right support can turn a small-scale operation into a community-driven success story.
Their work brings Haida seafood to the world—while keeping tradition, economy, and sovereignty close to home.
