Sustainable Power and Culture

Sta’ailes Development Corporation Powers Community Spaces with Sustainable Energy
Sta’ailes Development Corporation is lighting the way forward with a clean energy project rooted in sustainability and community values. With funding from the BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (BCICEI), they upgraded an aging hydro generator and installed solar panels to power one of their lodges, a space that supports community connection, tourism, and cultural revitalization.
The goal was clear: reduce reliance on conventional power sources and build a system that would serve the community well into the future. The upgrades now provide heat and hot water through renewable energy, reducing emissions while enhancing energy independence for the Nation.
Energy That Reflects Indigenous Values
For Sta’ailes, energy is more than just power, it’s a reflection of their relationship with the land. Choosing to invest in solar and hydro technology was a way to honour that connection while protecting the surrounding environment. These upgrades are a tangible example of how clean energy can support cultural spaces without compromising the land they sit on.
Sustainability with Purpose
Instead of expanding infrastructure, Sta’ailes focused on making existing assets more sustainable. This strategy allowed them to preserve the natural landscape while ensuring their lodge remains a welcoming and efficient space for years to come. It’s a practical, forward-thinking approach that other Indigenous communities can learn from.
