Growing Culture, Community, and Connection Through Food

Studio sísp̓l̓k̓ is more than a food project—it’s a movement rooted in cultural resurgence. With support from the Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty Grant, the team is creating a space where Indigenous food systems can thrive once again through growing, learning, and teaching on the land.

What’s Happening at Studio sísp̓l̓k̓

Located on Syilx territory, Studio sísp̓l̓k̓ is building a space dedicated to the cultivation of Indigenous foods and the education that surrounds them. Their work includes planting traditional crops, restoring land impacted by invasive species, and creating a site where community members can gather to learn and reconnect with ancestral food practices.

The vision is long-term: a place where people of all ages can come together to revitalize knowledge that was interrupted—but never lost.

As shared in the video, “This isn’t just food—it’s language, it’s story, it’s healing. It’s about remembering who we are.”

Why Indigenous Food Revitalization Matters

Across BC, First Nations are reclaiming relationships with their traditional foods. That includes restoring growing practices, protecting Indigenous plants, and creating safe spaces for community learning. Studio sísp̓l̓k̓ is leading this work with intention, care, and culture at the centre.

Their project is helping to ensure that future generations not only know how to grow and gather food—but understand where it comes from and why it matters.
