Supporting Indigenous Workforce Development Through a Community-Led Approach

Indigenous workforce development is strongest when it is shaped by community, grounded in local knowledge, and connected to a long-term vision.

That is what makes K5T’s project so meaningful.

Through this work, K5T is creating a learning experience that reflects the values, practices, and perspectives of the community itself. Rather than building something from the outside in, the project is rooted in conversation, collaboration, and community leadership.

Storytelling as a Teaching Tool

Film is a powerful way to share knowledge.

For many Indigenous communities, storytelling and oral history have always been essential ways of teaching, learning, and passing down knowledge. By using film as part of this project, K5T is building on that tradition in a way that feels both meaningful and practical.

This approach creates space for knowledge to be shared clearly, respectfully, and in a format that can reach wider audiences.

Building Curriculum Through Community Knowledge

Information sessions and community roundtable discussions have played an important role in shaping this project.

These conversations are helping form a curriculum designed for an industry audience, while staying grounded in the realities, teachings, and future vision of the local community. This gives the work a strong foundation and helps ensure the learning experience reflects the people and place it comes from.

It also shows what is possible when curriculum development begins with listening.

Providing Cultural Context and Looking Ahead

A key part of this project is helping others better understand the cultural context of the community.

By sharing teachings around the feasting system, harvesting seasons, and other community practices, K5T is offering important knowledge to those arriving in the community. This kind of context supports stronger relationships, deeper understanding, and a more respectful approach to working alongside community members.

It is also helping shift perspectives for those involved. The project has helped participants see the scale of what they are building and created excitement around where this work can go next. That sense of possibility matters. It shows that workforce development is not only about immediate opportunities, but also about building tools, systems, and understanding that can support future generations.

How the Labour Market Fund Helped

Support from NRT’s Labour Market Fund helped make this project possible.

Funding supported key parts of the work, including filming and post-production, project management, curriculum development, and the learning management system needed for publication. Together, these pieces have helped K5T bring community knowledge into a learning format that can support workforce development in a meaningful and lasting way.

Projects like this show the value of investing in Indigenous-led approaches to workforce development. When communities are supported to design and deliver work on their own terms, the outcomes are stronger, more relevant, and better positioned to create long-term impact.
