Salish Elements Exploring Hydrogen

Omar Kassem of Salish Elements leads Indigenous clean energy strategy supported by BCICEI funding

A Groundbreaking Approach to Indigenous-Led Clean Energy

Salish Elements is redefining what clean energy leadership can look like in British Columbia. With support from the BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (BCICEI), this majority Indigenous-owned company is exploring the powerful potential of hydrogen—a clean, renewable fuel that could reshape the province’s energy future.

What’s Happening with Salish Elements

This project, developed in collaboration with Xaxli’p First Nation, is one of the first of its kind: a 25-megawatt green hydrogen production facility that uses renewable electricity to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen—producing zero emissions in the process.

Hydrogen offers a promising alternative to fossil fuels, and this facility could supply clean energy to a wide range of industries while creating economic opportunities for Indigenous communities.

As shared in the video, “This is more than energy—it’s a chance to lead in a new way and show how innovation and stewardship go hand in hand.”

Why It Matters for BC First Nations

Across the province, BC First Nations are leading the transition to clean energy—not just by adopting new technology, but by driving it forward. Salish Elements is a bold example of how Indigenous values, environmental responsibility, and cutting-edge innovation can come together to build a better future for everyone.

This project isn’t just a win for clean energy. It’s a step toward energy sovereignty, economic development, and a sustainable future led by Indigenous communities.

About the BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (BCICEI)

The BCICEI supports First Nations in BC with funding and capacity-building to explore and implement clean energy projects. From solar, hydro, and wind to emerging innovations like hydrogen, the initiative empowers Indigenous communities to shape their own energy futures.
